Are You Comfortably Unhappy?

Updated: Jun 24, 2018

You're not fully satisfied, but you are not willing to do anything about it just yet.

Comfortably unhappy. … I just came across this phrase and it struck me like a lighting bolt because I would guess many people feel this way. We are not fully satisfied but we are so used to the world of dissatisfaction that we are unwilling to do anything to change it. … That would require work, effort, and potential rejection or failure, which in turn could result in more unhappiness. So why try? … Um, HELLO!! Why NOT try? … Personally, I did not know I was comfortably unhappy for a while. I knew I wasn’t satisfied but I was blind to the fact that I wasn’t do anything to try to make my world better. I just kept going through the motions. … My guess is that the fear of failure, the unknown, the possibility of what could be, is so terrifying that it is just easier to stay with what you know. Even if it stinks. … Now, I often hear, “I don’t have the time or resources to make a change.” In other words, “I am acknowledging that I am comfortably unhappy, and you just showed me that I could be happy, but I am not going to do anything about it right now.” … So, my challenge to you all is to ask yourself how long you want to stay comfortably unhappy? I am guessing you did not grow up thinking “I am going to design a mediocre life, where I am used to settling for what I have.” If you are my people, you grew up dreaming big and waiting great things. So, what changed? … What if today you decided that you no longer wanted to settle for being comfortably unhappy? … I remember the day I decided I was done with mediocre, maybe today will be your day.
